Welfare Reform Bill Introduced on Beacon Hill

The bill, aimed at curbing abuse and fraud, will be debated by the Senate Thursday.

State Senate Democrats have introduced a new bill this week intended at reforming the Massachusetts welfare system, including forcing applicants to prove they have searched for employment through a state program. According to Boston.com, the bill is aimed at shaking up what Senate President Therese Murray called a "stagnant" system. And the Senate expects to act quickly with a vote coming Thursday. Boston.com reported the bill would also force adult welfare recipients to use EBT cards with "photographic identity." Penalties of perjury could be imposed on recipients who use a false identity. Republican Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr said in a statement that the bill "reflects a comprehensive approach that seeks to transition recipients …

Gomez, Markey Set for Final Senate Debate

Debate to air on WCVB Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Another U.S. Senate election for Massachusetts is drawing to a close, with the two combatants set to square off one final time before voters head to the polls June 25. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey of Malden and Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez will hold the last of three debates Tuesday evening in the race to fill the seat formerly held by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The debate will air live from 7 to 8 p.m. on WCVB (Channel 5). The debate will be moderated by R.D. Sahl of Boston University. The two previous debates for the candidates were held in Boston and Springfield. Recent polling has suggested an edge for Markey in the race. Both candidates have received visits from high-profile …

At least Gomez has actually worked in the private sector. It's the private sector that creates jobs, not the government. The only real world job Markey has ever had is driving an ice cream truck! I'd take a 15 year equity investing career over that any day. And talk about declining or ignoring requests for an interview! Markey has been avoiding FOX 25 news anchor Maria Stephanos' request for a …   more ›

Petition to Remove Chiefs From Civil Service Passes House, on to Senate

The city's request is one step closer to final approval, which will mean Peabody's next permanent police chief will not hired with Civil Service protections and protocols.

The city's home rule petition to remove both the Peabody police and fire chiefs jobs from Civil Service jurisdiction was given its final blessing by the state House of Representatives on Monday, reports state Rep. Ted Speliotis. Speliotis said the bill, which he and fellow Rep. Leah Cole had co-sponsored, came out of committee and passed on the House floor after its third and final reading. The bill now moves to the Senate for a similar procedure before seeking the signature of Gov. Deval Patrick to make it official. Speliotis said there were no concerns voiced about the request, which first originated with Mayor Ted Bettencourt this spring, and he maintained the measure should not be viewed as an "attack" on Civil Service. He said he and …

Pad Thai, Curry and Fried Rice to Go, Please

Route 1 may soon become the new home for a fast food Thai restaurant.

So how do you feel about drive-through Thai food? Unsure? Maybe that's because fast food Thai restaurants are relatively a foreign concept in the United States. A quick Internet search yields several hits, mostly out on the West Coast, one even in Alaska and one in Florida. Vannee Chaisuphatanakul wants to bring fast food Thai to Peabody. She will be before the City Council Thursday night for a special permit to operate a drive-through service restaurant at the former location of Dunkin' Donuts on Route 1 South. The building at 108 Newbury St. has been empty since the fall of 2011 when the donut shop moved up the road to a new shopping plaza at 124 Newbury St. According to the application Chaisuphatanakul filed with the city, she's looking…

I agree with the first two people posting on this-if this actually did happen, charges need to be filed. Animal cruelty should not be tolerated.   more ›

Speaking of Pay Raises and Union Contracts...

Several of the city's 14 public employee unions have already settled on new three-year contracts that allow, in general, for 2 percent annual pay raises.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt indicated in his remarks on the budget last week that all city unions are getting the same deal when it comes to salaries in new collective bargaining contracts -- 2 percent each year for three years. The first of the 14 employee unions to actually settle their new contracts with the city were the two bargaining units that represent police captains and all other officers, about 100 employees in total. That agreement was inked back in February. The largest union, the Peabody Federation of Teachers, and several other bargaining units representing school employees still have yet to settle, but Bettencourt expects that to happen in the coming weeks. The police contract, just like the raises now approved for non-union …

Crowley 'Lives On' in Dedication of Trail in Her Memory

City officials, family and friends of the late Kristen Crowley gathered Saturday to dedicate a new spur of the city's bikeway in Crowley's memory.

About 50 people turned out Saturday morning to dedicate a recently completed piece of the city's bike path in memory of a Peabody woman who died 17 years ago. The 3/4-mile spur to the Peabody Independence Greenway at 545 Lowell St. was named in honor of Kristen Gove Crowley, a 27-year-old woman who was killed in a gruesome murder in 1996 just a short distance away outside her apartment building. Crowley was pulled from her car in the rear parking lot at the Ledgewood condominium complex and dragged into the woods where her two assailants tried to rape her and then bludgeoned her to death. The old rail line, which is now a recreational trail, actually runs right behind the complex and the area where Crowley was killed. Mayor Ted Bettencourt…
