The Dog Days of Orvis, Musicals and More This Weekend

Get a quick look at some of the local events happening this weekend in Peabody and nearby on the North Shore.

The days are getting shorter but it is still summertime, with lots of great events happening this weekend. Among the highlights: a performance of "Annie Jr.," a day for dogs at the Orvis store and the opening weekend of Beverly Homecoming, which includes Airport Day. You can also check out Circus Smirkus up in Newbury.

1. DOG DAYS OF ORVIS

Where/When: Orvis, 210 Andover St., Peabody; Saturday and Sunday, noon - 3 p.m.

Why Go: Stop in at the Northshore Mall store for a celebration of your pets from noon - 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Two local shelters will also be there for meet and greets and there will be a raffle giveaway and special in-store savings.

Pricing: Free

2. ANNIE JR.

Where/When: Danvers High School Auditorium, 60 Cabot Rd., Danvers; Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: The musical production is the inaugural effort of the Danvers Performing Arts Project, a new initiative to expose middle and and high school students in Danvers to all aspects of the performing arts.  The program is run by Kyla Moulton and Alex Grover, who respectively direct the theater and choral programs at DHS.

Pricing: $5 at the door

3. BEVERLY HOMECOMING 2013

Where/When: Various locations, including downtown Beverly, Lynch Park and Beverly Airport

Why Go: It is the 48th edition of Beverly Homecoming, which kicks into high gear this weekend. Saturday is Airport Day at Beverly Municipal Day and in the evening "The Block" downtown block party runs 5:30-9:30 on Cabot Street between Federal and Pond streets. Sunday is Tiny Tots Day at Lynch Park and the Hospital Point lighthouse at the end of Bayview Avenue is open for tours.

Pricing: Most events free, prices vary

4. SEUSSICAL JR.

Where/When: Community House of Hamilton-Wenham, Hamilton; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, come to live on the stage in this production from the Community House Theater, with music direction by Beverly High School Choral Director Carolyn Pilanen-Kudlik.

Pricing: Adults, $15; Children 18 and under, $13

5. CIRCUS SMIRKUS

Where/When: Manter Field, 81 Central St., Newbury; Friday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Saturday, 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: The show brings 29 performers, age 11-18, with "youthful exuberance and polished skills" from all over the U.S. and the world for the 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' tour, which is Circus Smirkus' version of the Wizard of Oz.

Pricing: $21 for adults; $17 for children age 2-12.
