Here's what you need to know for this week in Peabody.

Today is Monday, Dec. 23. Here's a look at the week ahead in Peabody.

  1. The Licensing Board is going to be hearing several petitions Monday night on two licenses it currently has available -- an all-alcohol restaurant license and a beer and wine restaurant license. The board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the basement conference room at City Hall.
  2. English Conversation Circles at the Main Branch Library give non-native English speaking adults a chance to practice their speaking skills in a relaxed, informal setting. The sessions are free, led by a volunteer for one hour each week and run for six weeks. Some English speaking skill is necessary to participate. Registration is required, and seating is limited for each group. Call 978-531-0100 ext. 25.
  3. If the snow hasn't all melted away first, you can get some skiing in at Brooksby Farm. The Ski Haus is now open during school vacation periods and weekends from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Regular weekday hours are Monday and Wednesday from 1-4:30 p.m. and Friday from noon - 4:30 p.m. Cross country skiing and snowshoe rentals in all sizes are available for $10 per person ($5 for kids under 13). Payment is by cash or check only. Lessons are also available for $15. Call Randy Weld at 978-536-7132 for more details and conditions.
  4. And speaking of school vacation, are your kids signed up for any of the activities with the Recreation Department? There are a number of programs scheduled this week and next. Check www.peabodyrecreation.com for more details and to register.
  5. The Enon Brass, a local band, will be playing Christmas carols at the Market Basket in Danvers Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. to raise donations for The Salvation Army in Massachusetts.
  6. Haven from Hunger is opening its doors again for Christmas dinner on Wednesday at noon. The free meal with all the fixings is followed by some gift giving. The food pantry is located at 71 Wallis St. in Peabody and will also be closing at noon on Tuesday.
  7. North Shore residents are also welcome to stop in at North Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Danvers for a free Christmas dinner on Wednesday. The dinner includes roast turkey with all the trimmings, an assortment of desserts, caroling and live musical entertainment. The Danvers Clergy Association and Temple Beth Shalom are co-sponsors of the dinner. Anyone who needs a ride to and from the dinner should call the church and leave a message with the NSUU church administrator at 978-774-7582.
  8. Zentangle Group: There's a Zentangle group that meets in the Trustees Room at the library on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. Zentangle is a method that uses structured patterns to create artwork. Bring your own supplies. Recommended items include white card stock, a black micron pen and a pencil. New members are always welcome.
