NSCAP Presents Danvers Community Council With Berry Service Award

North Shore Community Action Programs will recognize the Danvers Community Council tonight for its decades of work, most recently with homeless families living in Danvers motels.

North Shore Community Action Programs is proud to announce that the Danvers Community Council will be honored as this year’s recipient of its community service award named for Senate Majority Leader Fred Berry. 

The Senator Frederick E. Berry Community Service Award was established in recognition of Senator Berry’s inspiring leadership and his dedication to improving the lives of low-income families and individuals. Senator Berry is a lifelong resident of Peabody, currently serving his 14th term in the Massachusetts State Senate representing Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield.

He has served as Majority Leader since 2003. The award is presented each fall at NSCAP’s Annual Meeting,

In selecting the Danvers Community Council as this year’s recipient, NSCAP recognizes the volunteer group’s outstanding service to the homeless families who have been relocated by the state to Danvers. At its highest point last August, there were .

“The Danvers Community Council’s responsiveness to these families and its leadership in coordinating services such as food deliveries and sponsoring meals for the children’s summer recreation program has truly been inspiring,” said Beth Hogan, Executive Director of NSCAP.

The Danvers Community Council’s work on behalf of homeless families is just the latest in a long history of service. For many years, the council has collected and distributed food through the People to People Food Pantry and coordinated an annual “Holiday Giving Program.”

The organization is ready to assist Danvers residents with all manner of emergencies, the most prominent in recent memory being the explosion in Danversport on Thanksgiving eve in 2006. In that disaster, the council administered a fund for the families that provided more than $150,000 in assistance. The group has also served local families in recent years through the Children’s Clothes Closet & Thrift Shop.

The council was established in the early 1950s and has contributed to the volunteer ethic that is prevalent in the town.

NSCAP’s Annual Meeting Dinner and Awards Ceremony takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 6 p.m., at the , 38 Oak St., Peabody.

In addition to presenting the Senator Frederick E. Berry Community Service Award, NSCAP will recognize staff for service milestones and honor volunteers who have made significant contributions to NSCAP programs including ESOL, Salem CyberSpace, Advocacy, Income Tax Services and  the River House.

Founded in 1965, NSCAP provides a range of services and activities that impact upon and mitigate the causes and conditions of poverty. While the various programs serve 22 municipalities, NSCAP’s anti-poverty efforts are focused on the designated communities of Salem, Peabody, Beverly and Danvers.
