For the past couple months, students at M.J. O'Malley's Tae Kwon Do studio on Lynnfield Street have been perfecting their kicks.
And it wasn't just because of their discipline for technique, the 2013 Kicks Challenge actually benefits the effort to create a new memorial in Peabody for the city's police and firefighters.

Students chose their kicking techniques and then asked friends and family to sponsore them for a penny a kick or a one-time donation. The students also received special commemorative patches on their belts if they did 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 kicks in the challenge.
All the proceeds from the challenge will be donated to the Peabody Fire and Police Memorial Fund and a check will be presented to Fire Capt. Dale Kimball June 29 at the studio.

Kimball, in turn, will bring a fire engine and police cruiser or two with him for the youngsters to check out.
