Girls' Soccer Ascends to No. 1 in Nation

According to a national poll of high school soccer coaches this week, the unbeaten Lady Tanners are the best of the best.

They're not just No. 1 in Massachusetts now, but No. 1 in the nation, according to a poll earlier this week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The weekly ranking of high school soccer teams puts the Peabody High girls' club in top billing with an 8-0-0 record so far this season. Prior to the Oct. 2 poll, last year's state champions were ranked No. 2 nationally, reports ESPN.com -- they've sat at the No. 1 spot in the state for a while.

Despite senior standout Hayley Dowd coming into the season injured, there's been plenty of depth in the Tanners' lineup and Dowd looks to be back in full form. High-scorer and fellow senior Victoria Digiacomo, in fact, entered the 100 career point club on Sept. 20, scoring her 100th and 101st goals against Lynn Classical.

The closest contest so far was against Beverly on Sept. 23, with the Tanners coming away 1-0. They've posted six straight shutouts, and only allowed Saugus one goal Thursday in a 7-1 romp.

Peabody is now scheduled to head to Gloucester Monday, host Danvers Wednesday and then travel to Swampscott Friday.

The Danvers game should prove to be yet another fierce showdown between the soccer rivals -- the Falcons sit at 6-1-2, having lost the season opener to Andover.
