'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' of Downtown Peabody

The city is holding a public outreach meeting July 16 to discuss an economic development plan for the downtown.

What does the future hold for Peabody's downtown? If you stop in at the Torigian Center Tuesday night you can share your prediction with city officials, residents and other stakeholders.

The city is holding a public outreach meeting to discuss a specific economic development plan for the downtown. That plan is funded by a recent award -- a Brownfield District Planning Grant for Peabody from MassDevelopment.

Community Development Director Karen Sawyer says the purpose of the meeting is to solicit feedback from residents and business owners on “the good, the bad and the ugly” in the downtown.

In other words, Sawyer says, "What do you like, what don’t you like, and what would you like to see in our downtown?"

In regard to brownfields, they are environmentally polluted sites -- usually former industrial factories -- that often require extensive and costly remediation before they can be put back into productive use.

A recent example is the new park at 45 Walnut St., which was the site of a former leather factory.

Tuesday's meeting is at 6 p.m. and there will be pizza and ice cream served.
