State Workers Sent Home Ahead of Midweek Storm

Gov. Deval Patrick also urged private employers to send workers home early in expectation of a treacherous Tuesday commute.

Governor Deval Patrick has sent state workers home and asked private employers to do the same. The Tuesday afternoon announcement came ahead of a quick-hitting storm steaming into New England Tuesday afternoon.

The system is expected to dump 8-10 inches of snow in the Boston area, with lighter totals expected north and west of the city. Cape Cod and southeast coastal Massachusetts can expect higher snowfall totals and blizzard conditions.

By 3 p.m. Tuesday, snow had already started to fall on the Cape, prompting the governor to warn about a tough Tuesday night commute.

"If you're driving, be careful," said Patrick.

The storm has also forced the governor to postpone tonight's State of the Commonwealth address. The annual address will be rescheduled at a later date.
