Mayor Hosting Breakfast to Honor Peabody War Vets

Mayor Bettencourt will host a breakfast for the city's war veterans Sunday, particularly those who served in World War II, as a new part of the city's annual Veterans Day ceremonies.

They fought the Nazis and Japanese forces, they put their lives on the line for the country they believed in, and then came home and went to work. They were called the "Greatest Generation" for all those reasons and more.

At a time now when there are few veterans left from World War II, Mayor Ted Bettencourt would like to pay some small tribute to Peabody's soldiers on Veterans Day this Sunday.

Bettencourt is hosting the 1st Annual Peabody Veterans Day Breakfast Sunday morning at City Hall. The inaugural breakfast will honor all Peabody residents who served the United States in the armed forces and will include a special commemoration for veterans of World War II.

“The men and women who have served our country in the armed forces deserve our respect, recognition and gratitude,” said Bettencourt. “This year we honor those members of the Greatest Generation who served during World War II, without whom we would not enjoy the freedom and prosperity we so often take for granted.”

About 250 guests are expected Sunday.

The breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. in Wiggin Auditorium. Veterans should contact the Veteran Services Department at 978-538-5925 to reserve tickets. There is a limit of two tickets per household.

The city will conduct its annual Veterans Day ceremonies at 11 a.m. out in front of City Hall, following the breakfast. This year's ceremonies will be hosted by the Portuguese-American War Veterans.

What this generation had to do in order to defeat two major, evil forces in our world was just amazing. Our current "connected" generation cries when power goes out for 30 minutes and they can't connect to update their Facebook. Yet these men, women and families gave up many common daily items for YEARS without complaint. For those soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who gave so much to us, and to the women who stepped forward as WACS, WAVES, and to backfill production so that we could win against such determined foes -- THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
