Markey Pays a Visit to Peabody

The new senator stopped in for an official visit to the Tanner City this week.

Massachusetts' new senator on Capitol Hill, Ed Markey, made a stop in Peabody this week to get a first-hand glimpse of Main Street and talk local issues with city officials.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt led Markey on a tour Monday, accompanied by Congressman John Tierney, state Rep. Ted Speliotis, city councilor Arthur Athas and local businessman Arthur Gordon.

Markey, who was sworn in July 16, says Peabody was among his first official visits to a city or town as the Bay State's newest senator.

“We had a very productive meeting,” Bettencourt said in a press statement. “The senator was very interested in what is happening in Peabody and expressed his willingness to help the city going forward.”

"As Mayor, I certainly appreciate and look forward to his assistance at the federal level,” he said.

Bettencourt says he also spoke with Markey about about economic development, education, public safety and flood mitigation in Peabody.

“It was a nice opportunity to showcase our new Main Street and say hello to some local business owners,” said Bettencourt, who endorsed Markey in the campaign this spring. “It is not every day a U.S. senator comes to town so it was a good day for Peabody.”
