Congressman Tierney's Wife Injured in Danvers Car Crash

Patrice Tierney, the wife of Congressman John Tierney (D-6th District) was injured Tuesday morning when she was involved in a car accident near a Danvers elementary school.

Danvers Police Capt. Patrick Ambrose said Patrice Tierney was taken to Beverly Hospital after the 8:21 a.m. crash -- her car was struck from behind by another car near Highland Elementary School.

Congressman Tierney was spotted by reporters just past noon on Tuesday, helping his wife to a waiting car after she had been treated for injuries at the hospital, according to the Boston Herald.

One other person was taken to Lahey Clinic in Peabody after the crash and both of the cars involved were towed away, Ambrose said. He said a full report on the crash was not complete and would not be available until Wednesday.

"Her car was rear-ended at Centre and Hobart streets this morning," Ambrose said, adding that he did not have any information yet on the type of cars involved or whether any charges would be sought in connection to the crash.

Matt Robison, Tierney's campaign manager, issud a brief statement early Tuesday afternoon.

“While traveling this morning, Patrice Tierney’s car was struck from behind by another car. She sustained some injuries and was treated at Beverly Hospital before being released around mid-day. It appears that having her seat belt on prevented her injuries from being far more serious,” said Robison.

“She and Congressman Tierney thank all who expressed their concern during the last few hours and appreciate the continued thoughts and prayers from friends, family and supporters,” Robison said. “We are reviewing the Congressman's schedule for the next couple of days and will adjust it accordingly so that he can care for his wife.”

Tierney is scheduled to debate with Republican challenger Richard Tisei at WCVB-TV studios on Thursday.

Tisei, during a campaign stop in Peabody Tuesday afternoon, extended his sympathies to the Tierneys as well in light of the news.

"It's terrible that happened...I know that when you're in the middle of a campaign it's a very stressful period and to have something like that happen, obviously it must be really difficult," Tisei said. "I wish her well and I hope it [wasn't] a serious accident."

Tierney is engaged in a tight battle for re-election against Tisei. A third party candidate, Daniel Fishman is also in the race.

The Tierney campaign has been dogged by allegations that he knew more than he has told regarding an illegal gambling operation involving his wife, her brother and other family members.
