Congressman Edward Markey Says He Will Run For U.S. Senate

Congressman Edward Markey says he will run for Sen. John Kerry's seat, if Kerry is appointed U.S. Secretary of State.

The Associated Press and the Boston Herald are reporting that Congressman Edward Markey, D-7th, says he will run for Sen. John Kerry's seat, if Kerry is appointed U.S. Secretary of State.

Markey, who has been a U.S. Representative since 1976, doesn't represent any North Shore towns or cities. The 7th District runs from Winthrop and Revere roughly westward and a bit south toward Framingham.

Markey, the dean of the state's congressional delegation, issued a statement Thursday saying he's decided to run for Kerry's seat.

The Malden Democrat, reported the Boston Herald, said the events of recent weeks, from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary to the fiscal cliff debate, have made it clear Massachusetts needs a senator with what he called the "right priorities and values."

The announcement comes after two potential Democratic candidates said they wouldn't run: Connecticut resident Edward Kennedy Jr., the son of former Senator Edward Kennedy, and Cambridge actor Ben Affleck.

On the Republican side, it is widely expected for outgoing Senator Scott Brown to meet whomever emerges from the Democratic fray.

last I checked....the old-fart dinosaur CONSERVATIVES were the LOSERS(mitty-boy, scottie etc)! Which, contrary to your belief, makes the LIBERALS the WINNERS!

Is this a joke or something? Can't Massachusetts come up with someone better, that is if you are a Democrat. Scott Brown was great and sadly, the liberals in this state will vote for anyone or anything that is a Democrat. God help us.

You may be in the majority here on this site...but clearly, and thankfully, you are in the minority in this state! Democrats 2012!

I wish there were more choices. Remember when we had a choice between parties and we could vote for the better candidate? Now we have been pushed into a race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and religious preference bar fight by the White House, and while we are all arguing over "Libs" and "Whatevers" we are getting so, so screwed. I still cannot believe that the leader of our country would intentionally drag us to the Fiscal Cliff because he wants his little piece of ideology included in whatever solution the parties agree to. So Markey will very likely be "the guy," as I doubt he would have been permitted to declare himself by Party Central otherwise.
