City Awards $100K to Local Businesses to Spruce Up Storefronts

City officials announced recently that $100,000 in grant funds were awarded to 31 local business applicants in the downtown, providing them some help in upgrading signage, awnings and other storefront appearances.

City officials announced recently that the second annual grant program to help downtown businesses improve their storefronts has begun.

Using federal and local community development funds, the city allocated $100,000 to award to local businesses via grant applications to aid them in upgrading signage, awnings and other improvements to their exterior facades.

“This grant program goes hand-in-hand with all of our other downtown revitalization efforts,” said Mayor Michael Bonfanti in a press statement. “By partnering to invest in our local small businesses, we are not only beautifying our historic city-center, but also helping put the spotlight on a multitude of excellent local restaurants and businesses.”

This year, 31 out of 35 requests were approved by a selection committee of various city board members. The entire number of applications equaled more than $216,000, according to city officials.

Most of the projects that did receive funding were for signs, awnings, cosmetic lighting and window treatments.

Grant recipients have until Sept. 2 to complete the improvements, which will be just in time for the Peabody’s annual International Festival and Restaurant Week, as well as the fall tourist season on the North Shore, when thousands of visitors pass through Peabody Square, city officials said.
