Berry Endorses Lovely for Senate

Sen. Fred Berry says Lovely is best choice to take over his seat.

Sen. Fred Berry had endorsed Salem City Councilor Joan Lovely for his senate seat.

“I will cast my vote for Joan Lovely,” Berry said in a statement that was leaked to the press two days before planned, according to an article in the Salem News.

“As an eight-term city councilor and longtime community leader, Joan knows what local communities need from the state government. She has demonstrated both compassion and political courage in dealing with tight municipal budgets and providing vital services to her community.”

Joan Lovely said she "had no clue" of the endorsement until she was informed by a reporter, according to the Salem News article.

Berry has been senator of the 2nd Essex District — Beverly, Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Topsfield — since being elected in 1982.

Who cares?

If you are a working class blue collar voter then Senator Berry endorsed John Slattery. Why is it wrong for an elected official to be concerned about the majority of his/her constituents? We pay the majority of the taxes that fuel the government. So if you are part of this class, union and non union alike then the choice is clear.

then he endorsed the wrong canidate

Berry and Lovely are two peas in a pod. They never saw a tax they didn't like.

What I find interesing is neither the Patch nor salem news directly spoke to Berry to obtain this endorsement. The story came from el Globo by a woman named McCabe who just happens to have a sister as part of Lovely's campaign team.Since the comments attriubuted to Berry regarding the other candidates did not at all sound like him--I'll say what many people are thinking-the writer for el Globo wrote a complete lie to benefti her sisters patron --Joan Lovely! I DONT think Berry gave this endorsement at all--reports are he is quite ill! Its not as though the globe and its parent the ny times havent been guilty many times before of lying in print--remember Mike Barnicle & Patricia Smith, not to mention a half dozen writers from the times over the years! The fact that el Globo then went on to endorse Slattery today makes it even more strange, and plausible! I will be voting for the man Jesse Roman and the salem news have consistently dissed--Edward Carroll. Hes the only person with a plan to boost the economy without raising taxes with his terrific idea for a casino at the power plant location. Plus hes gets credit fo being the only one not to raise campaign money, the only senior cititizen, and the only non-lawyer! Lovley and Slattery rerpresent business as usual--more taxes, more spending, more taking care of special interests and donors instead of average folks like me! Please vote fo Edward Carroll state senate!

I am intrigued by the deductive reasoning of Linda here and had to respond! I spoke with several folks at a cook-out today in Peabody. All of them said the exact same thing! That the Fred Berry they know would never ever bad mouth the other candidates in the race! Thee are convinced that some thing is rotten about the globe writter McCabe's story-- and the fact that her sister is working for Lovely's campaign! I know investigavtive reporting is dead these days-but mabye my felllow Patch readers can get to the bottom here or at least repsond! The questions I have is--did Fred Berry actually speak to the globe writter McCabe and did his senate office put out the release on Friday 31 August-or did the release actually come in disguise from the Lovely campaign? There have been numerous allegations of impropriety on the part or the Lovely gang--so this issue needs to be pursued! I did call Berry's office and left a voice-mail message. I urge people, especially moderate and conservative independents. to vote Sept 6 in the dem primary, for the only candidate that has pledged to lower the income tax rate to 5 percent, and will push for lower taxes, more jobs, boost small business, reduce the waste in government. I am supporiting the candidate endorsed by not by other hack pols but--by poltiical watch Howie Carr--vote Mary Ellen Manning for state senate and tell your family & friends. We need a candidate with honesty & integrity!

And the Salem News made it up, too? http://www.salemnews.com/local/x1011133764/Berry-backs-Lovely-in-race-for-Senate And you believe that Berry's people would just let such lies go? LOL.

If your name is Jean Pinto, I can't really value your opinion, since you aren't a registered voter in the district. Strangely, the same is true of "Linda Toby," "Mira Day," and "Evan Weinberg"
Jean Pinto September 04, 2012 at 03:00 AM
Hey Klassy- You are dead wrong! I am a registered voter in the district! For security reasons iI will not disclose my address here!. Have the decency and honesty to use your real name when posting on the Patch before you wrongly accuse me of voter fraud! How dare you lecture me or anyone else on honesty! You and your pal Joan Lovely are gutless cowards! Folks, this is a prime example of the type of person that supports Joan Lovely-it explains everything! Please follks dont vote for Joan Lovely and kindly ignore the future lunatic postings of this big phony!
Evan Weinberg September 04, 2012 at 03:16 AM
Klassy Salem, you are wrong about me and really out of line!. I am a registered voter in the district and you are absolutely out of line! You owe me an apology and should show some honesty & integrity here and use your real name instead of a phony one!.Your opinion has no value when you are dishonest and use a phony name! By the way salem is far from klassy-it might the worst city of its size in the state! How can anyone who uses a phony name on the Patch, attack me when I use my real name on the Patch and everywhere else. Previous poster was right on-friends here is a Lovely supporter showing who she/he really is! I would really enjoy hearing from that Lovely water carrier Derek up next! I bet he is a good friend of yours klassy! Dont vote for Joan Lovely Sept 6!
Bob Daly September 04, 2012 at 03:29 AM
Just say no to Joan Lovely and no to klassy salem! Theres an old adage klassy, people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.! I do have a news tip here. klassy's favorite media outlet the salem news-that great bastion of honesty, decency, fairness & integrity will endorse klassys good friend Joan Lovely Tuesday Sept 4--because they live in fear of Fidel Castro er Kim Driscoll-the power behind old Joanie!. Yet another reason to vote for ANYONE but Joan Lovely! Is Mike Schultz any relation to Segeant Schultz!
Sean McCrea September 04, 2012 at 03:45 AM
Vote JOHN SLATTERY and honor Labor Day 2012! Get out the vote this Thursday for JOHN SLATTERY, Second Essex, State Senate Democratic Primary! The working class of Peabody, Salem and Beverly have been fighting too long and too hard to sleep on this candidate. The rights and influence of working class American folks are collapsing due to policies that embrace unlimited conservative campaign contributions, U.S.-led globalized trade that promotes cheap overseas labor, the deterioration of U.S. labor rights, conservative pressure to keep health care an expensive consumer commodity, the blind-faith support of militaristic adventurism that sends our kids to war for the sake of cheap dirty energy, and the denial of voting rights to our country's minority populations. JOHN SLATTERY is the only candidate for State Senate who has the best interests of our District's working class at the forefront of his agenda. Let's not consider Mary-Ellen Manning, who at the Salem Moose Lodge debate deemed Massachusetts' progressive and successful Health program "unconstitutional." Let's show our dissatisfaction that Joan Lovely considers bus drivers, janitors, grave-diggers and street-pavers "special interest" groups. Wake up all of you who work with your hands for a living, who sweat for a modest paycheck, and let's keep Massachusetts a BLUE DEMOCRATIC STATE... a state like our mothers and fathers wished it to be, and their parents before that. VOTE SLATTERY: an advocate for those who work hard.
Bill September 04, 2012 at 03:00 PM
His endorsement is all I need to know - I will not vote for Joanie. The fact he lasted 30 years is all you need to know about the sad state of local politics.
Chris Chatzi September 05, 2012 at 01:56 AM
Sean McCrea = broken record.
Patty nizwantowski September 05, 2012 at 10:33 PM
I just received a mailing from the Lovely campaign. I find it reprehensible that Lovely would lift a partial quote from the Globe to make it appear she was their endorsed candidate. She neglected to include the final sentence of that quote in which the Globe gave a wholehearted endorsement of John Slattery. Underhanded politics from the Lovely campaign you be the judge.
john September 05, 2012 at 10:53 PM
I don't see KlassySalem registered either?? Don't throw bombs unless you can defend from the incoming.
KlassySalem September 05, 2012 at 11:18 PM
I was not impressed by that move, either. Disappointing. This whole race has been disappointing, really.
john September 05, 2012 at 11:27 PM
And that's politics,disappointing.
Bill September 06, 2012 at 04:11 PM
Just voted for Manning. Felt dirty taking a Dem ballot. It made me feel like taking the day off and doing nothing but hang around outside the Walgreens
Tom Flannagan September 07, 2012 at 02:19 AM
That's real classy. Please don't take a Democrat ballot again. We not need the "help".
Antoine M. Boisvert September 07, 2012 at 03:03 AM
Oh, c'mon Tom. What is the benefit of having an open primary if unenrolled voters can't take the party ballot for the race that interests them? At least the dems were actually having a race for the seat. Closed primaries that only registered party members can vote in are what pull politics in this country out to the edges (OK, not the only thing, but one thing). I have taken a GOP ballot loads of times, though I have rarely backed any GOP candidates in November. At least Bill actually got out and voted.
Bill September 07, 2012 at 02:19 PM
Tom - Don't you mean Klassy? You must be a true Dem, not really interested in Democracy, just your way or the highway
