Wilmington Man to Face Charges in Lowell Street Crash

Three people are still hospitalized with serious injuries while a fourth only suffered bumps and bruises and was released.

Peabody police say the man behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Camaro that smashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle on Lowell Street Tuesday afternoon will be charged with reckless driving and possibly other charges once the investigation concludes.

The driver was identified by police as 39-year-old Jason Daniels of 44 Shawsheen Ave. in Wilmington.

Detective Michael Crane, a department spokesman, said both Daniels and a 26-year-old Peabody man who was a passenger in the Camaro were taken to Mass. General Hospital in Boston with serious injuries.

The accident occurred around 4:20 p.m. near 350 Lowell St. Police said the initial accident reconstruction indicates the Camaro was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it hit a Ford Edge, which is a crossover SUV.

Crane said firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free Daniels and his passenger from the Camaro. They were still hospitalized on Wednesday, he said.

The driver of the Ford, a male, also suffered serious injuries, likely to his spine, lower torso and leg, based on observations by officers at the scene. A female passenger only suffered minor injuries and was later released from the hospital.

Crane said the couple was initially taken to Salem Hospital, but then transferred to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington. The male was still hospitalized as well Wednesday, he said.

Crane said the accident reconstruction and investigation is still ongoing at this time.
