Truck KO's Traffic Light at Lowell and King Street

A tractor-trailer truck knocked down traffic lights at the intersection of Lowell and King streets Wednesday morning.

A set of lights mounted on a pole was knocked clean off its footing around 10 a.m. and police moved it to the sidewalk.

Police closed Endicott Street heading toward Wilson Square, but the busy intersection otherwise remained open with one officer directing traffic.

The truck was found up on Hunt Street and may have been making a delivery at the Center School. Police said one of the tires on the truck was damaged and some telephone wires on Irving Street were also knocked down by the rig.

A repair crew was requested to respond to fix the downed traffic signal. As of 11 a.m., the officer at the scene said the lights would probably be out for at least another couple hours.

According to a later police log entry, the driver of the tractor-trailer -- a 58-year-old Virginia man -- was issued a court summons on charges of leaving the scene of property damage, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and not having a vehicle registration in his possession.
