This Year Marks 11th Anniversary of 9/11

The Fire Department and Mayor Bettencourt will hold a brief public ceremony Tuesday morning outside Fire Headquarters.

Tuesday marks 11 years since the tragic terrorist attacks that claimed 3,000 lives aboard jetliners in New York and Pennsylvania and public safety personnel at the base of the Twin Towers.

In honor of all those who lost their lives that Sept. 11, the city will hold its annual public remembrance service Tuesday morning in front of . Mayor Ted Bettencourt will join the Fire Department in a brief commemoration service.

  • 9:50 a.m. - Apparatus roll out of bays to appropriate location in front of station.
  • 9:55 a.m. - All available Fire Department personnel assemble at attention in front of apparatus and maintain silence followed by remarks by Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt (or his designee) and Chief Steven E. Pasdon.
  • 10 a.m. - Fire Alarm transmit special signal 5 – 5 – 5 – 5
  • Lower flag
  • One minute of complete silence
  • Prayer by chaplain, local minister or in their absence by any Fire Department member, followed by Firefighters’ Prayer.
  • Fire Alarm transmit special signal 5 – 5 – 5 – 5
  • Raise flag
  • Return to service

The city put on a special parade and ceremonies for the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 last year along with readying the . The half-acre plot of land was turned into a memorial to Peabody's three victims in the terrorist attacks: Christine Barbuto, N. Janis Lasden and Donald DiTullio.
