Salem Woman Allegedly Strikes Car While Drunk, Flees Into Cemetery

A 59-year-old Salem woman was charged with her second OUI offense after a hit-and-run accident on Saturday.

A Salem woman was arrested Saturday night after she allegedly struck a vehicle on Margin Street while intoxicated and then fled the scene into a nearby cemetery.

Marie A. Gauthier, 59, of 5 Riverbank Rd., Salem, was arrested at approximately 7:05 p.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (second offense) and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

The accident occurred near St. Thomas the Apostle Church, which is right on the city line with Salem. There were no injuries to report.

Police said the suspect vehicle fled into St. Mary's Cemetery, which is next to the church, and it was located by officers next to a garage on the property.

Gauthier was then taken into custody.
