Police Say Woman Hit By Car in Critical Condition at Hospital

A 75-year-old Peabody woman who was struck and severely injured by a car Friday night was trying to cross the street near her home at the time of the accident, says police.

A 75-year-old Peabody woman who was struck by a car Friday night was still listed in critical condition at Mass. General Hospital in Boston on Saturday evening, according to Peabody police.

Police Capt. Dennis Bonaiuto released a statement around 8 p.m. Saturday, identifying the woman, confirming some details of the accident and saying the investigation was still ongoing.

Bonaiuto said the woman is Patricia Fleury, 75, of 20 Central St., Peabody, and she remains in critical condition at MGH.

Bonaiuto said officers responded to a car accident involving a pedestrian in the vicinity of 22 Central St. on Friday at 8:45 p.m. He said the pedestrian was crossing in the northbound lane of Central Street when she was struck by a
car being driven in that same lane.

According to scanner reports, Fleury bounced off the car and the vehicle -- a red Nissan sedan -- fled the scene up Central Street toward Danvers. Fleury was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Bonaiuto confirmed Peabody officers have spoken with the owner of the suspect vehicle as well as the person who admits to being behind the wheel during the accident. No further details on that point were released.

According to scanner reports Friday night, a Danvers female had left the car on Fowler Street in Danvers and walked a short distance to the police station there to turn herself in. Initial reports said there may have been a male driving the car.

Bonaiuto said Peabody officers and detectives are continuing their investigation with assistance from a state police collision analysis and reconstruction team.
