Peabody Fire Crews Knock Down Large Trash Fire

Refuse inside a transfer station off Forest Street and Route 1 caught fire Tuesday morning.

Numerous fire crews were at the scene of a large fire inside the Allied Waste facility off Route 1 Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported around 8:15 a.m. and rising smoke could be seen along Route 1. Motorists on Route 128 could also smell the fire burning.

A second alarm was struck around 9 a.m., but according to firefighters at the scene, the majority of flames were knocked down shortly before 10 a.m.

Heavy machinery was brought in to the scene and crews be seen operating it to move piles of refuse around inside the transfer station as smoke still rose from the building.

The location of the facility is 300 Forest St., just behind the Plaza Motel at 129 Newbury St. and the commercial plaza housing Red's Kitchen & Tavern.

Forest Street was still closed off to traffic as of 10:30 a.m.

Fire inspectors were also at the scene, but did not have any information to release yet.

Mutual Aid from neighboring fire departments was called in to cover the city's stations. The Peabody Fire Department has doused similar trash fires before at the transfer station.
