State police issued a statement Monday night, confirming one passenger has died. The investigation is ongoing, although police are looking into speed and the weather as possible factors in the crash.

State police say one person has died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Route 128.

The SUV was traveling on the southbound side of the highway around 4 p.m. and struck the right guardrail, coming to rest on its roof in the lefthand lane, according to a preliminary investigation by state police.

The driver, 26-year-old Rony Lopez, of Lynn, was not ejected from the vehicle and was taken to Salem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

State police said all three passengers in the SUV were ejected -- that exact point went back-and-forth between two and three in initial reports from the scene. All three were taken to Mass. General Hospital in Boston.

State police said Frederico Lopez, 18, of Lynn, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and Antonio Ramirez, 31, of Lynn, was treated for minor injuries. The third passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by state police, although they have indicated at this time that speed and the weather were possible factors in the crash.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Peabody Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance. The lefthand lane was closed for approximately one hour during the course of the investigation.

No further details are available at this time.
