Man Arrested After Found Asleep in Woman's Car and Fire on Berry St.

The following information was provided by the Peabody Police Department. Where charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following excerpts are from reports in the Peabody Police Department press log from Aug. 4-6.

Sunday, Aug. 4

  • 8:29 a.m. Theresa A. Hartford, 35, 2R Washington St. #B, Peabody, was arrested on a warrant at the Pioneer House.
  • 9:47 a.m. Freddy Taveras, 32, of 4-1/2 Sprague St. #2, Peabody, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after a woman at the same address reported her ex-boyfriend was banging on the door.
  • 1:34 p.m. A caller at a Washington Street apartment reported a past break-in. Police said an ex-roommate might be involved.
  • 1:43 p.m. A caller on Herold Road reported a break-in to her home.
  • 3:58 p.m. An employee at Stop & Shop reported an act of vandalism inside the store.
  • 5:26 p.m. Leanne M. Belanger, 24, of Malden, was arrested, following a report of a shoplifter at Sears. She was charged with one count of shoplifting by concealing merchandise.
  • 6:14 p.m. Report of slashed car tires on Davis Terrace.
  • 8:07 p.m. A caller reported hearing gunshot sounds in the area of Emmet and Tremont streets. An officer checked the area, but didn't find anything suspicious.
  • 8:40 p.m. A caller reported someone was setting off fireworks at Farnham Park and had lit a campfire as well. Police said the fire was in a barrel and it was doused by an officer.

Monday, Aug. 5

  • 2:03 a.m. A caller reported a large amount of trash and building supplies were dumped at O'Conor Park.
  • 7:47 a.m. Luis G. Cortes, 32, of 63 Veterans Memorial Dr., Peabody, was arrested, following a report of a man sleeping in a woman's car on Longview Way. Cortes was charged with breaking and entering for a misdemeanor and trespassing.
  • 9:27 a.m. A caller reported there was a live electrical wire down on the ground in front of a mobile home unit on Route 1. PMLP was notified and responded to the scene.
  • 9:36 a.m. Manuel Vargas, 30, of 45 Washington St. #1, Peabody, was arrested, following a report of a disturbance at another Washington Street residence. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
  • 9:53 a.m. A caller on Buxton Street complained about a neighbor's rooster. He was advised to contact the Health Department.
  • 12:43 p.m. A caller reported a house on Johnson Street was damaged by a former tenant.
  • 1:02 p.m. A caller at ALX Visual on Main Street reported a $400 mountain bike was stolen.
  • 3:30 p.m. A Linden Road resident reported he was in an accident with another resident the day before. He said he was driving his car and the other man was on a bicycle. EMS, police nor fire personnel were called to the scene. He said the other man told him he wasn't hurt, but the bicycle tire was bent. He gave the cyclist $30 for the tire and they both went on their way. The next day, however, the cyclist began texting him saying he was hurt and asking about medical bills. He said he came to the station to fill out an accident report to cover himself and police told him to save any texts he receives. They also told him to call police in the future if he gets into an accident. Police said the other man had made no effort to date to report the incident.
  • 5:03 p.m. A caller reported possible drug activity at an Eagan Place residence.
  • 5:09 p.m. Police and fire responded to a report of a building fire at Century Tire on Walnut Street. Police said there were pork chops on the grill.
  • 7:19 p.m. A Peabody woman reported her credit card account was hacked and used multiple times that day for purchases in New York.
  • 7:51 p.m. Janelle L. Cordy, 43, of 7 Spring Street Ct., Peabody, was arrested for violation of a restraining order at her residence.
  • 8:42 p.m. A caller reported an old municipal garage at 5 Berry St. was on fire. Police said the back interior of the building was fully engulfed. The blaze was knocked down after several minutes. Fire inspectors and a detective investigated the scene.
  • 9:52 p.m. A caller said four youths egged a home at 2 Proctor Cir. The juveniles then fled in a dark pickup truck. Police located the truck at the corner of Lowell and Taylor streets. The juveniles were escorted back to the property "where they were able to correct their error in judgment by cleaning the eggs off of the complainant's home."

Tuesday, Aug. 6

  • 12:13 a.m. An officer reported taking pictures of graffiti at 5 Berry St., which was the scene of a fire Monday night. The log entry was unclear if there was a connection to the fire.
  • 12:20 a.m. A caller on Henry Terrace reported suspicious activity -- a person was walking in the backyard. Police said it was a friend of the homeowner's son. He was looking for an engagement ring his ex-fiance threw in the yard.
  • 7:22 a.m. Police responded to a car accident with a motorcycle on Route 114 near the Century House Restaurant. Both the operator of the motorcycle -- a Peabody male -- and the drive of the car -- a Danvers female -- were taken to local hospitals with injuries.
  • 9:04 a.m. A Pleasant Street reported her iPhone was taken from her apartment.
  • 10:33 a.m. A 79-year-old Peabody woman was transported to Beverly Hospital with injuries after a three-car accident on Route 114 near Chandler's Ice Cream.
  • 11:07 a.m. An Endicott Street resident reported his bicycle was stolen and another one was left in its place.
