Juvenile Tries to Steal Manhole Cover

The following are excerpts from reports in the Peabody Police Department press log from Jan. 9-10.

Wednesday, Jan. 9

  • 3:11 p.m. A 52-year-old Peabody woman was issued a court summons for larceny under $250 after the district manager for the Dunkin' Donuts at 672 Lowell St. reported theft from the store by an employee.
  • 3:38 p.m. A caller on Russell Street reported she was almost a victim of a telephone scam. She said she received a call that her grandson was out of the country and in need of help. She was told to send money and realized it was a scam before she did so.
  • 4:13 p.m. A 41-year-old Gloucester woman was issued a court summons for shoplifting at Stop & Shop.
  • 5:06 p.m. State police reported receiving a call of an erratic operator that got off Route 128 headed west on Route 114. Danvers police were also notified.
  • 6:07 p.m. Store security at Sears reported someone walked out of the store with a $300 mixer without paying for it. Police said the suspects were seen leaving the area in a gray Buick.
  • 6:52 p.m. Report of loud bangs or "explosion" sounds in the neighborhood of Sunset Drive. Police checked the area, but did not find anything.
  • 7:13 p.m. A caller on Mansfield Street reported his house was broken into during the day. Entry was gained through an unlocked door. The homeowner was compiling a list of stolen items to forward to police.
  • 7:38 p.m. A caller reported a young male was trying to steal a manhole cover at the corner of Walnut and Howley streets, and when approached by a passerby, the juvenile dropped the cover and fled. An officer said he was able to place the manhole cover back in place.
  • 7:41 p.m. A caller on Central Street reported several items were stolen from her residence. Police said a sapphire ring and two peridot rings worth $600 were taken.
  • 7:45 p.m. A caller on Bristol Road reported hearing what she thought sounded like gunshots. Police checked the area and said all was quiet.
  • 8:37 p.m. A caller reported there was an injured owl in the road at the corner of Goodale and Lowell streets. Police said the owl flew off into the woods before they arrived.
  • 8:42 p.m. A caller on Columbus Road reported one of his truck tires was slashed overnight.

Thursday, Jan. 10

  • 12:10 p.m. A 16-year-old was arrested for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, following a hit-and-run accident at the corner of Water and Central streets. A male caller told police a silver Volkswagen struck his car and fled the scene. The juvenile was taken into custody and transferred to Salem Juvenile Court.
  • 12:34 p.m. A caller on Upham Street reported his recycling bin was missing. He said he was concerned because it didn't look like there were any other recycling bins on the street either.
  • 12:37 p.m. An employee at Sears Automotive reported a bag was stolen from a customer.  Police said a briefcase and bag valued at $400 were taken from a rental vehicle.
  • 1:12 p.m. An Olsen Road resident reported a package was taken from the front of his house. Police said the incident might just be a mix-up with Fedex and the person would call back if needed.
  • 1:36 p.m. A caller at the corner of Nickerson Road and Margin Street reported he broke the axle of his tow truck and needed a tow truck for his tow truck.
