Head-On Crash on Lowell Street Leaves One Person Trapped

Traffic on Lowell Street near Route 128 was being detoured away from the area late Tuesday afternoon.

At least one person was taken to Mass. General Hospital in Boston Tuesday afternoon, following a car crash on Lowell Street. A second ambulance may have also taken a patient to the hospital -- both people reportedly had serious injuries.

According to scanner reports, a head-on crash occurred near 350 Lowell St. around 4:20 p.m. The street was shut down to traffic in both directions and detoured up Prospect Street at one end and Route 128 at the other end.

Scanner reports indicated at least one person was trapped inside a vehicle and there were four injured people total.

Both Peabody police and firefighters responded to the scene and three ambulances were initially requested while the trapped occupant was freed. State police also responded with an accident reconstruction team.

As of 6:30 p.m., Lowell Street was still closed to traffic, according to police.

A witness told Peabody Patch her vehicle was stopped right next to the accident scene, just before Northshore Road, as firefighters prepared to use the Jaws of Life to free the trapped person.
