Topsfield Edition of Connections: On Campaign Trail with Mary-Ellen Manning for State Senate

Some thoughts about connecting with voters on the campaign trail with Mary-Ellen Manning, Governor's Councillor and candidate for state senate.

On Saturday, I fulfilled a campaign promise made early on. I promised that I would knock on the door of every Topsfield voter who was likely to vote in the Democratic Primary this Thursday, September 6. And I fulfilled that promise Saturday. One of the many promises I will fulfill if the voters return me to office--this time as the State Senator for Second Essex. I have been honored to have represented Topsfield, Danvers, Beverly, Salem and Peabody for almost 12 years now as the district's Governor's Councillor.

One gentlemen was so surprised when he realized that I was campaigning door-to-door in Topsfield. "No one ever campaigns up here...the houses are too far apart," he said. I told him that Topsfield is just as important to me as any other part of the district, and I demonstrated that.

But let me tell you the sights that I saw today in Topsfield:

I saw 25-foot sunflowers, the likes of which I had never seen before.

Two beautiful horses saw me walking near their corral and they both sauntered over to say hi to me. One even let me pet him, before starting to chew the fencepost.

A woman shared her personal tragedy with me, and encouraged me to increase services to rape victims. This was a powerful conversation.

And my sister told me she got chased down the street by a beaver while canvassing. I did not actually see this...but I did see her act it out so I feel I can retell it with confidence that it actually occurred.

What a memorable experience.

Looking forward to representing this beautiful town as your next state senator.

Mary-Ellen Manning is an attorney and a candidate for the open state senate seat in the Second Essex district.
