Secrets to Selling Your House This Spring

What you need to do to help get your home ready to sell in the busy spring market.

As spring fast approaches, so does the prime time for homebuying. If you are thinking of selling your home this spring, there are some simple yet vital steps you can take to help move the process along.

Create Curb Appeal

The first thing potential buyers will see is the exterior of your home. Some will even drive by on their own before agreeing to a showing, so you’ll want to make sure your yard, porch, garage and façade are well taken care of. Clean out all of the leaves and muck that may have piled up over the winter and weed and fertilize your lawn. Plant some bright but neutral flowers like yellow tulips or daffodils and make sure your hedges are neatly trimmed and that nothing is covering the exterior of your home. You want buyers to be able to see it clearly from the street.

Ensure your gutters are clear and that shutters, windows, doors and screens are all clean and in good repair. If you have children, keep toys neatly stowed away when they are not playing with them and if you have pets, always be sure that you’ve cleaned up the yard after they have done their business.

A dirty home won’t sell. A lot of sellers think they have sufficiently cleaned their house, but potential buyers want to see a squeaky clean home. You’ll want to first tidy everything up and make sure everything has a place. Throw away or donate items that you haven’t used in years and if need be, put some items in storage. A neat and tidy home creates the appearance of more space. Then, scrub your house from top to bottom. Potential homebuyers will be looking at every corner, crack and crevice in your home, and you’ll want to make sure that there is no dirt or grime hiding out.

Keep Your Interior Neutral

You have your personal tastes and have decorated your home according to those tastes, but in order to sell your house you need to appeal to a wide audience. If you have brightly colored walls or unique carpet, you should tone them down with more neutral shades and basic rugs. Repaint walls in neutral shades to open up rooms and make them appear more spacious. You’ll also want to repair any flooring, baseboards, cabinets, switches or counters that are cracked, stained or in disrepair.

The more effort you put into sprucing up your house for buyers this spring, the better chances you have of selling your home quickly and for top dollar.
