Take the Cooking Oil From Your Thanksgiving Feast and Recycle it

The used cooking oil will be converted into BioDiesel by US Foods, which will then make a donation to Haven from Hunger, based on the volume of oil recycled that day.

The city is partnering with US Foods to encourage residents to recycle their used cooking oil leftover from Thanksgiving to convert it into BioDiesel and support their local food pantry at the same time.

Residents can safely dispose of used oil at the Department of Public Services at 50 Farm Ave. on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., where a representative from US Foods will be stationed to collect it all.

The oil will be converted into BioDiesel and following the recycling drive, the company will make a donation to Haven from Hunger based on the total volume of oil collected that day.

“This recycling program helps keep used fryer oil from entering the waste stream or contaminating the local water supply,” said Mayor Ted Bettencourt. “It helps us protect the environment while raising money for a very worthy cause – the Haven from Hunger.”

Liquid cooking oil should be placed in rigid plastic containers, labeled and secured with screw top lids, or you could simply pour the turkey fryer oil back in its original container (no larger than five gallons).

Peanut, soy, rice, canola, olive oil or other vegetable blends of liquid cooking oil can be dropped off as well, but solid cooking grease, fats, food scraps or motor oil will not be accepted.
