ALS Association of Massachusetts Begins PEABODY Support Group

The ALS Association, Massachusetts Chapter will hold the first meeting of the ALS Support Group and Information Sharing Group for Northeast Massachusetts on Thursday, September 26th, 2013, from 1:30-3pm. The meeting will be held at the Peter A. Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody.  The meeting will be hosted by the Peabody Council on Aging and representatives will be present at the meeting as well as ALS Chapter staff.

The Support Group will meet monthly, on the 4th Thursday of the month.

Various guest speakers and topics will be discussed.  The group is open to people with ALS, their families, friends and caregivers.  There is no
charge to attend.

The ALS
Association is the only national non-profit health organization dedicated

solely to the fight against ALS. They address research, patient and community
services, public education, and advocacy as they provide help and hope to those

facing this disease.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord.  When these cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement dies with them.  Patients in the later stages of the disease are totally paralyzed, yet in most cases, their minds remain sharp and alert.
