Gould Tops Ticket; Walsh, McGinn, Moutsoulas, Saslaw All Win Council Seats

Tuesday proved to be a low turnout election as voters generally gave incumbents another term, except over in Ward 2.

There will be a handful of new faces on the City Council next year, although that was a given with three councilors retiring this year and two of the "new" councilors have served before.

City councilor Tom Gould once again topped the ticket in the at-large race Tuesday night, with former state Rep. Tom Walsh picking up the open seat and incumbents Dave Gravel, Anne Manning-Martin and Mike Garabedian all winning back their seats.

In Ward 2, Arthur Athas lost his seat to challenger Peter McGinn, while Ward 3 went to former councilor Jim Moutsoulas and Joel Saslaw won Ward 5.

Overall turnout for the day was 24 percent, somewhat lower than City Clerk Tim Spanos had predicted.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt and School Committee members Beverley Griffin Dunne, Tom Rossignoll and Jarrod Hochman were all unopposed this year, along with Light Commissioner Charles Bonfanti.

Jean Ahearn and Don McAllister each won another term on the Board of Library Trustees while Stephanie Najjar and Paul Misci were elected to two open seats.
