Local and state officials, family and friends all gathered Monday morning at St. Thomas the Apostle Church to mourn the loss of Peabody state Rep. Joyce Spiliotis.
. She was 65.
Spiliotis was first elected to the 12th Essex District seat in the House of Representatives in 2002 after serving as a Peabody city councilor for 10 years and Library Trustee for two. She was just re-elected, unchallenged, to her sixth House term earlier this month.
Spiliotis lived her entire life in Peabody and was a popular representative with her constituents, widely regarded as a selfless and tireless advocate for the average voter and those who did not often have a public voice.
A funeral procession with a Peabody police escort traveled up North Street onto Margin Street from the O'Donnell Funeral Home in Salem just before 10 a.m. Monday, arriving in front of the Catholic Church, which sits on the city line between Salem and Peabody. State police provided a traffic detail.
Among the dignitaries present Monday were Congressman John Tierney, state Senators Fred Berry and Bruce Tarr and state Reps. Brad Jones, Ted Speliotis and John Keenan. Gov. Deval Patrick attended a wake for Spiliotis on Sunday.
After the service, Spiliotis' burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, located behind the church.
