5 Things to Know: Peabody High Swimmers Finish Best Season in 8 Years
Peabody High swim coach Maureen Shea says her swimmers and divers finished the regular season with the best record they've had since joining the NEC eight years ago.
Today is Wednesday, Jan. 23. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.
- Pool warriors: Coach Maureen Shea says her swimming and diving team at Peabody High just finished off its best season record in eight years last night, dunking Revere, 101-67, at the Torigian Family YMCA. The Tanners conclude their dual season with a record of 6-1-1, second in the Northeastern Conference behind Marblehead. Shea said the diving team of Paige Hayward and Corey Pierce picked up first and second, respectively, while Maria Strakosha won the 200 freestyle, Christine Shea took the 100 breaststroke, and Alex Strakosha won the 200 individual medley and Alex Guay won the 50 and 100 freestyles on the boys' side. The girls' 400 freestyle relay team and the boys' relay teams in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle all won their events as well.
- The Peabody City Council will convene in regular session on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) in Wiggin Auditorium at City Hall and is scheduled to finally take a vote to approve the zoning ban on marijuana facilities in the city. A Finance Committee meeting is also scheduled at 6:30 p.m.
- Senator Joan Lovely will speak on Friday morning (7:30-8:30 a.m.) at the Danversport Yacht Club for the North Shore Business Forum. Lovely will share some perspective from her first three weeks on Beacon Hill and preview upcoming legislative issues that will affect small businesses on the North Shore.
- Youth sports signups: The annual citywide youth sports signups will be held Jan. 26 and Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. - noon at the Higgins Middle School cafeteria on both days. Most Peabody youth sports organizations will be present for questions and registrations. If you have questions, contact the organizations directly. The Peabody Recreation Department sponsors the event, but does not handle any of the registrations. A copy of your child's birth certificate is required if you will be registering for sports. You can find contact information for the various sports on the parks and recreation page of the city's website.
- The state of the city: Mayor Ted Bettencourt will give his mid-term state of the city address again before the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce for a breakast event Jan. 30 at the Holiday Inn from 7:30-9 a.m.
