The Boston Herald was first of local papers which have endorsed in the 2nd Essex District state Senate race ahead of the September 6th primary.

"In the Second Essex district now held by the retiring Sen. Fred Berry, which contains Beverly, Peabody, Salem, Danvers and Topsfield, the sensible choice in the Democratic primary is Salem City Councilor Joan B. Lovely. Her opponents include John Slattery of Peabody, who famously staked out both sides of the death penalty issue when he previously served in the House (and cast the fatal vote that killed a death penalty bill); and current Governor’s Councilor Mary-Ellen Manning, who needn’t bring her brand of insular politics from the Council Chamber to the Senate chamber.

The Herald is pleased to endorse Lovely."

There is no excuse for the Patch not to insist on a policy that reflects honesty & transparency. A poster must disclose he/she is part of a campaign when submitting material to be published. This guy Derek is dishonest and theres a reason so many people have had enough of his nonsense. He has a well deserved reputation as being quite mean and nasty to anyone that disagrees him with especially women. He is a perfect surrogate for Joan Lovely and another reason not to vote for her. Lovely consistently votes to increase taxes and fees and has run a highly unethical camapaign, thanks in large part to this guy Derek--John Slattery is the reason we have no death penalty in this state with his disgraceful flip-flop and his servitude to corrupt public employee unions who want more and more spending at the tax payers expense. The other 2 candidates, Edward Carroll and Mary-Ellen Manning would be far better choices, because they are not controlled by anyone!

I agree with the editorial board here. The original post was a quote from a newspaper. In fact, the author added little of his own position or support. It is not the duty of the Patch to do a background check on every poster to determine their political bent. You have other candidates supporters posting here, including - obviously - this thread. You have sitting Selectmen in local communities posting to this thread. The response by Mira demanding the Patch reveal the posters political ties or leanings is foolish. The same free speech that allowed Mira to post, allows the original author to post. Rebut the authors point, not the Patch's policy of free - identified - speech.

Lets face it. This Derek guy is a complete scoundrel! My sister met him at a couple of events and told me he is one of the rudest, most arrogant people she has ever met! She will not be voting democrat any time soon in a general election! I have never met any of the candidates and the Patch nees to come clean and admit they booted this one! People submiiting info promoting political candidates need to be required to post that they are part of the campaign team! It is not any violation of free speech--you cant yell fire in crowded hall or theater either! There is an old adage that applies here. Show me who your friends are and I'll show you who you are! Joan Lovelys friends speak volumes about her complete lack of character, ethics and integrity! I am voting for the only person not raising money, the only non lawyer and the only senior citizen in the race--Edward Carroll for state senate!

Labels the working class as a special interest group???? That is untrue and absurd. And you put it in quotes??? Unless you can back that up, that is inflammatory and borderline libelous. Where is your link???

You are attributing quotes to people that are harmful and untrue. Manning has never labeled the working class any such thing and I know she has the highest respect for working people. You keep posting this nonsense and I resent it. So, if anything goes here, then john slattery regards taxpayers as "dumb suckers" and child rapists as "misunderstood".
