Owner Joanne Schulte has paid special attention to detail, from the doo wop music to the old black and white “I Love Lucy” and “Mayberry” episodes playing on the flat screen television — walking through the door is like taking a step back in time.

J&J’s Doo Wop Deli is located in downtown Peabody at 47 Central St. and has been in business since 2010. The decor inside is bubble gum pink — a real throwback to the 1950s.

This sandwich and sub shop takes its menu one step further than just the atmosphere, specializing in homemade fare, primarily for lunch and dinner. The deli has quickly gained a following for its homemade meatballs and meatloaf dinner, and its award-winning homemade chili, which was voted best in Peabody and took second place at the Danvers Chili Contest.

“They have the best meatballs. They have to slice them thin just to get them into the sub rolls for their meatball subs; they are so big and so good,” says customer Desiree Wynott.

With an extensive prepared food selection geared toward families, complete meals such as roasted pork loin, roasted chicken and turkey dinners can easily be re-heated at home. Doo Wop Deli also prepares party platters for special occasions.

The deli prides itself on its kid-friendly atmosphere and menu items such as mac and cheese and Richardson’s ice cream, which aim to please the younger palates.

According to Schulte’s step-son, who has been with the deli since its inception, the store motto is: “Good food, good prices, good people waiting on you.”

The deli did close this week, but will be open for business again July 12. Regular hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Doo Wop is closed on Sundays.
