Saturday Market Offers Food, Arts, Crafts, Music and More

The new Saturday Farmers Market kicks off Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the courtyard of the library on Main Street.

This weekend marks the first Saturday Farmers Market in Peabody, and those who do stop in on Saturday can take in much more than just fresh fruits and vegetables.

The market will run for six consecutive Saturdays from Aug. 13 through Sept. 17, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., in the courtyard of the Peabody Institute Library at 82 Main St.

Penny Srybny of Hereford Valley Farm in Andover and Peabody’s own Brooksby Farm will be pioneering the market with fresh produce (), but Cap’t Pete’s Lobster Trap will also be there Saturday, selling live lobsters.

You'll also be able to enjoy live music from local performers from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

To kick things off, Peabody's own Sean Augy plays this Saturday, followed on Aug. 20 by Sam Feinstein & Co. and Ron Sarro (also both from Peabody). Craig Range plays Sept. 3 and Judy C will be performing Sept. 10.

And if that's not enough reason, shoppers can peruse wares from numerous artists and crafters, many of whom are local residents.

Some items to expect are original acrylic paintings on canvas, handpainted glass items, homemade soaps and other bath and body items, gift baskets, greeting cards, photography (matted photos, magnets, key chains, cards), handmade scarves, jewelry, journals, hats, doll clothing and more.

For the opening day of the market, the first 100 customers will receive a free canvas tote bag with a purchase from any of the vendors.

All this has become possible thanks to the committed team efforts of a core group of volunteers, said Lucia DelNegro. DelNegro is the city's conservation agent and in charge of running the city's two farmers markets.

She hopes the new market can become the same staple in the summer months that the Tuesday market is.

"If you see something [you like], buy it then," DelNegro said, noting that each vendor has only committed to set up shop for three Saturdays, but they are not all consecutive.

GreenPeabody and the Friends of Peabody Institute Library will also have booths at the market and the Friends will conducting their annual used book sale.

If you can't find a parking spot out on Main Street, the lot on Mill Street across from the post office will be open to the public, but only during market hours.

DelNegro says she's always looking to add new food vendors, farmers, artists, crafters, musicians and volunteers. Particularly on the music front, there are still two Saturdays open for bands: Aug. 27 and Sept. 17.

You can contact DelNegro in the Community Development Department at 978-538-5782 or lucia.delnegro@peabody-ma.gov. You can also find regular updates on a Facebook page DelNegro created for the farmers markets.
