Owner:
Holly Lazdowski

of Peabody is hosting a on Monday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. to benefit the Peabody Youth Football and Youth Cheerleading Programs. Hair cuts are $10 on a first-come, first-served basis and no appointments are necessary.

The salon has been under new ownership since October 2010, and new owner Holly Lazdowski is excited both to show off the new beautiful interior after a grueling few days of remodeling, and especially for the upcoming cut-a-thon.

Peabody Patch caught up with Lazdowski earlier this week to learn more.

“Laurel Mullen is a client of mine who’s been coming here for years — since before I had my seven-year-old daughter — and she’s in charge of the youth cheerleading,” Lazdowski said. “She asked me if I would consider doing a cut-a-thon for the kids because she knew I’d treat the clients good, make them feel comfortable and make it a nice experience for them.”

“We think it’s going to be a pretty big event, so we asked Carmines Restoration, [which] used to be located in Boston, to help out too. He’s donating his time to do $10 hair cuts for the boys,” Lazdowski added.

Q: How did you come to purchase the salon?

A: “The studio has been in business for over 30 years with just three owners. I bought the business from the second owner after working there for 15 years, and she only sold to me because she knew I wouldn’t do anything different — keep it like a family — and keep up with the classes. It’s a funny story how the second owner purchased the salon. She bought it from the original owner after working there for years, and the original owner wound up working for the second owner. She loved working in hair design, just didn’t want to run the business anymore. The Hallmark building where we’re located has turned into the beauty building, with Carmines Restoration next door. We all help each other out; it’s a great place to work.”

Q: What’s new at Details?

A: “We remodeled the sinks, we got all new stylist chairs, a color bar, and a new hostess station, all with a black and white theme. We just took two days to get the work done, I have two girls, ages three and seven, and it was hard to be away from them and to close the salon, because I never close, but we did it. Details is a Paul Mitchell signature salon; we pamper our customers and make them feel special. We know how expensive it is to get your hair done, so we want to make them comfortable.”

Q: What is a color bar, and why is that important?

A: “The color bar is for clients to see us find their formula to get their perfect color — we don’t disappear down the hall to mix the chemicals. This way they know it’s not from a box. We actually pay a little extra to find the right color, formula and texture for their hair, sometimes it takes a mixture of three different colors to get that one perfect color.”

Q: What techniques do you enlist to achieve the desired results?

A: “There are so many different techniques we learn to create highlights and low-lights. We are taught to do block coloring and cole lighting. A lot of stylists don’t keep up with the classes, but we have to because there are so many new techniques out there that we have to know more than the salon down the street.”

Q: Where did you study hair design/ how long been doing hair?

A: “I went to New England Hair Academy in Malden and then I started out at Salon Mario in Marblehead. He actually trained me and I learned everything there. I moved from salon to salon, in towns like Lexington and Lynnfield, moving farther away from home. It’s funny, I felt I had to be out of town to learn more upscale cuts, but I learned that even though the place looks beautiful, it doesn’t mean they keep up with their color classes, or give good cuts. Now here I am in Peabody, but a big reason why I remodeled is to let people know this is a local place with an upscale vibe.”

Q: What do you specialize in?

A: “I specialize in a lot of foil and color techniques, and I take a good amount of time to get to know my customers. I want to understand their habits and know their background so I know they’ll be able to style their hair on their own.”

Q: Who are the stylists?

A: “Angela has been here since the beginning, over twenty years. She’s a mom and so fun, and one of our most popular stylists.

“Alessia is a stylist from the Paul Mitchell school in Providence and has been with us for five years. She came to us during a time when Angela had injured her shoulder and was unable to work. To help her out, we held a cut-a-thon, brought in Alessia and she and the other stylists donated their time to raise over $2,000 for her. Alessia was able to come in and do as good a job as Angela, keep her clients maintained until Angela could come back, then she ended up staying with us.

“Jackie is the youngest, only twenty, but everyone loves her because she’s so talented and creative.

“Danny specializes in weddings, and will go everywhere for them. He does smoothing treatments called keratin, which conditions the hair, closing out the cuticle, and lasts four to six months. Keratin is a no-formeldahyde straightener.

“Sim does extremely creative makeup work and specializes in weddings and makeovers. She she will go to a client's home and make them over from top to bottom. She brings out the magic in her clients, her foils and cuts are beautiful — she just has the gift.”

Lazdowski is passionate about providing her clients the best service with her talented and skilled team of stylists, and excited to be a part of a continued history of success.

“Before buying the salon, I couldn’t imagine leaving this building, or the girls I’m working with. They are really dedicated to the classes they have to take and are very educated in all the products,” she said.
