New Pizza Shop to Open Soon on Vacant Lot

City Council appproves Dominos Pizza.

Residents of the city's downtown area may have a new pizza delivery option soon.

The City Council approved Thursday a preliminary plan to open a new Dominos Pizza location at 1 Andover St., an oft-vacant business lot that was most recently home to the Boston Design Group.

The plan would turn the existing building on the lot in to a Dominos location with both take out and eat-in options, as well as delivery service to that area of the city.

Although councilors were leary of traffic concerns at what is one of the busiest corners in the city, they unanimously approved the plan citing the need to bring a viable business to that area of the city.

"That is a tough spot but I support the effort to put a successful business there and I hope they do well," said Ward 1 Councilor Barry Osbourne. "That spot has been vacant for a while and there have been quite a few businesses that have come through there over the years."

The proposed location for the pizza shop sits at the corners of Andover Street (Route 114) and Pulaski Street, a main artery for motorists traveling from Lynn, Salem and downtown Peabody to businesses on Route 114 and to Route 95 north and south.

Police Chief Robert Champagne gave his blessing to the business under the condition that there are no left turns in or out of the parking lot.

While both councilors and public safety officials blessed the proposal, at least one resident turned out to oppose the plan.

"That is a very, very busy part of the city. If someone slows up there to take a right into Dominos it is going to back up traffic, especially in the afternoons," said resident and former City Council candidate Russell Donovan. "There needs to be a more detailed traffic plan before the council approves this."

Despite Donovan's opposition, the council went ahead with the proposal under the condition that Champagne's criteria were met and that no other business be opened on that lot. There is no timetable for construction or the opening of the business.
