becomes official May 1, following approval by state officials in March.

The Salem News reported that all 15 members of the state's public health council, which is chaired by Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach, unanimously signed off on the affiliation between the two hospital networks on March 21.

The new network now includes Lahey's hospitals in and Burlington along with doctors offices north of Boston and Beverly Hospital, Beverly Hospital at Danvers, Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester and BayRidge in Lynn.

Lahey Health System is not being labeled a "merger" by board members of the two organizations because no money changed hands and Northeast Health System is being absorbed into Lahey in name only. There will be equal representation on a new board of directors between the two under the leadership of Lahey CEO Dr. Howard Grant.
