‘I Hate You, Dad’ Crew Rents Out Cabaret Lounge for Week of Filming

Filming for "I Hate You, Dad" returns to Peabody at the Cabaret Lounge this week.

Adam Sandler and company are back in town this week, filming at the .

Unlike when the crew transformed an apartment building on Collins Street two weeks ago to look like a Boston tenement, there were no crowds of onlookers; the heavy traffic along Route 1 South prohibits any safe public gathering on the side of the road.

One new feature to the exterior of the nightclub is a cartoonish looking sign of a female that has been attracting some attention from motorists.

The set itself was closed to the public, according to police officers monitoring traffic and security on the site.

The film is “I Hate You, Dad,” a comedy slated for a June, 2012 release in theaters. A brief synopsis of the movie found on the Internet Movie Database simply says the story is about “a disagreeable father who moves in with his son before he’s about to get married.”

City officials say the Route 1 club has been rented out for the week for filming by Columbia Pictures. On Tuesday afternoon, trailers covered the parking lot while various set crew members milled about outside.

Earlier this month, Sandler and company spent a day filming a scene at an apartment complex next to Club Luis de Camoes on Collins Street before heading to the Capitol Diner in Lynn.

Building Commissioner Kevin Goggin said that when dealing with Hollywood shoots, he assembles a task force on the city’s end, representing his department, police, fire, etc, to work with the crew on addressing any issues or safety concerns on a unified front. Goggin said he’s been told it’s usually a smooth process, and this time was no exception.

Goggin said Columbia Pictures had to take out permits for the new sign and the change in use at the site for the duration of filming — regular patrons will have to cross the highway or go elsewhere this week.

In addition to Peabody, filming locations have included Boston, Everett, Lynn and down to Cape Cod after this week.

IMDB reports “I Hate You, Dad” is being directed by Sean Anders and John Morris and stars Sandler, Andy Samberg, Susan Sarandon, Leighton Meester, James Caan, Vanilla Ice and others.
