What do you do when you’re a bicycle enthusiast and the nearest specialty shop with the best reputation is in Vermont, three hours away? Well, if you are anything like Marty Miserandino, you just open your own.

Miserandino says he was so impressed by the level of expertise and services offered at Fit Werx in Waitsfield, Vt. that he contacted the owner, Ian Buchanan, and broached the topic of joining forces.

Now in business together with Buchanon and co-partner, Wenham resident Dean Phillips, since 2007, the Peabody shop at 67 Foster St. has become just as popular with bicyclists as the original Vermont shop.

Miserandino, a Swampscott native now residing in Salem, has been extremely pleased by the success.

“It's been outstanding; our business is growing. The more people we fit, the more people we fit; so our reputation is getting out there. We’re very fortunate,” said Miserandino.

Recognized as one of the “100 Best Bike Shops" in the United States in the October 2011 issue of Bicycling Magazine, the article described a Fit Werx fitting as having customers riding with less pain -- and more power -- after just one session.

The shop has developed a reputation as New England’s bike fit and products specialists. Miserandino says the Fit Werx mindset is that every rider has their own technique and posture on a bike, so riders should not have to conform to fit their bike, rather the bicycle should be modified to fit the rider.

The fitting process is a multi-step procedure used to optimize comfort, efficiency and speed for riders of road or triathalon bikes. Through the collection and analysis of data, the bicycle is built to accomodate each rider's specific needs.

Miserandino describes a part of the process: ”It’s a dynamic, multi-imaging Adjustable Sizing Cycle that establishes the rider's position. We can optimize the position, take those findings and use it to alter their bike to fit them properly.”

Fit Werx was initially founded to cater to clientele in the greater Boston area, but has now gained a following from biking enthusiasts worldwide.

“Our customer ranges from charity and recreational riders, to pro athletes, such as Mike Caiazzo, a pro triathlete who just won a half Ironman up in Maine this past weekend, and Cait Snow, who won Ironman Lake Placid a few years ago,” said Miserandino.

He added: “Other bike shops do bike fittiing, but no one is as comprehensive or thorough as we are, it’s really our specialty. We literally have people from as far away as China come over here to little Peabody to use our services.”
