"New Year, New You!" But Is This Really True?

January 1, 2013 came and went as any other day, but somehow we seem to think this day is the day we are going to make a change, set a goal, or do something different.

January 1, 2013 came and went as any other day, but somehow we seem to think this day is the day we are going to make a change, set a goal, or do something different.

Now, I’m not saying that this isn’t a great way to make changes in our lives but is it really necessary to do it on January 1?

My biggest pet peeve is the quintessential New Year’s resolutions.

For some it almost seems as though it’s the only time to make a change with their lives, and it needs to start with a sense of urgency. Remember it is a “new year” resolution which means you get 365 days to achieve whatever it is that you looking to do.

Being in the fitness industry for more than 15 years, I have seen it all!

Gyms offer programs that will have you burn loads of calories, and blow torch your fat (right off your body…I might add). Telling you time after time that you will get the results you are looking for.

My fellow colleagues and trainer friends even cash in on this time of year by offering special workouts, transformation challenges that will get you get you in that bikini by this summer.

I see it all over the media, with workout DVDs, fitness products, diet programs, supplements and anything else that you can think of that will get you thinking…this is the ONE thing that’s going to get me to lose weight.

Have you ever thought why it is that you can’t lose those extra pounds?

Maybe it’s because you’re thinking about why you CAN’T instead of doing it? It’s not a product of a special workout that’s going to give you results. It’s you! Yes, I said it. It is completely up to you! No more excuses!

Plenty of people have been successful in various ways to get that weight off. Walking, dancing, running, interval training and so many other training methods can get the job done. You just need to do it!

It’s simply about moving and healthy nutrition. That’s it! I’m sure you were expecting some new workout or special nutrition plan. Sorry to disappoint you, but it’s that simple.

Whatever happened to the days of just wanting to be healthy, move better, and feel at your best mentally and physically?

It’s not one of those one time a year resolutions or 30-day challenges, this is a lifelong commitment to yourself to live the best life you can possibly live.

I have learned many things over the years and have reinvented myself as a trainer by educating myself on the ever-changing fitness industry but it always comes back to the basics: Eat clean, move, sleep well and be happy with what you are doing.

I’m sure you may have many other things to add to this list but I like to simplify things.

As Steve Jobs says…“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains”.

Just do it!
