A Festival All Green, a High School Cake War and More This Weekend

Get a quick look at some of the local events happening this weekend in Peabody and nearby on the North Shore.

After you stop by the third annual GreenFest in Peabody Saturday morning, there's a high school cake decorating war on in Danvers, and there's a lot of other events going on in Beverly and the nearby area of the North Shore.

1. PLANT SALES

Where/When: Long Hill in Beverly, Beverly Senior Center and Old Hamilton Library/Hamilton Council in Aging. All sales start at 9 a.m.

Why Go: There's three plant sales on Saturday morning, all within a few miles of each other. In Beverly, both Trustees of the Reservations and the Friendly Garden Club are hosting sales and the Hamilton-Wenham Garden Club has its sale at the old Hamilton Library.

2. NEW ENGLAND LIGHTHOUSE EXPERT

Where/When: First Baptist Church in Beverly; Saturday 7 p.m.

Why Go: Jeremy D’Entremont is the leading expert on New England lighthouses and he will hold a public presentation titled “Lighthouses of the North Shore” inside First Baptist Church - the only church is the country that also has an operating lighthouse. Desert and coffee will be served and D’Entremont will sign his books.

Pricing: $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under 12, collected at the door.

3. GREENFEST 2013

Where/When: Capt. Samuel Brown Elementary School, Peabody; Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Why Go: The third annual event put on by GreenPeabody will highlight the environmentally friendly projects students at the Brown School have been doing all year as part of a partnership with the committee, as well as feature more than 20 exhibitors -- green organizations, businesses and institutions -- from around the North Shore and free demonstrations. There will also be free document shredding and more.

4. HIGH SCHOOL CAKE WAR

Where/When: Cakes for Occasions, Danvers; Saturday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: Catch the cake-decorating showdown between five local high school seniors. Cakes for Occasions is holding its first ever High School Cake War featuring competitors from Danvers, Peabody, Beverly, Salem and Masconomet Regional High School who will show off their skills and school spirit. Competitors will be supplied with three hours, cake, butter cream, decorating tools and supplies to create a three-tier cake showcasing their school pride. Friends, family, fellow classmates and the public are welcome to come by, cheer on their favorites and sample slices of the yummy creations at the close of competition. Once time is up, a photo of each of cake will be posted on Facebook and whoever receives the most votes wins desserts for a senior "All Night Party" and a college award if entering college in the fall.

5. SWAMPWALK GRAND OPENING

Where/When: Danvers Swampwalk; Saturday, 10 a.m.

Why Go: The Swampwalk through the Great Wenham Swamp - on the Danvers and Wenham town lines - has been a great addition to the outdoor adventure options in the area. Saturday marks the official grand opening for the project. Transportation to the event will be provided, if needed, from the Route 97 rail trail crossing in Wenham. Parking is also available at Choate Farm off Locust Street in Danvers and near Agway on Wenham Street in Danvers.
