City Marks 12th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks at Barbuto Memorial Garden

A brief service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the courtyard, which is located just off the auditorium at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.

Peabody will mark the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks this year with a brief ceremony Wednesday at the site of a special dedication to one of the victims who died that day.

City and school officials will conduct a ceremony at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School at 11 a.m. in a courtyard just dedicated last year to 9/11 victim and 1986 PVMHS grad Christine Barbuto.

The memorial garden was a project started by Barbuto's former teachers at PVMHS and the result of numerous members of the community pitching in with money or donated labor and materials.

The garden, which is located off the school auditorium, was publicly unveiled and dedicated last October. During the school year, it serves as a quiet spot for reflection for students and staff alike.

Barbuto was one of three Peabody people killed aboard American Airlines Flight 11. The other two were N. Janis Lasden and her boyfriend Donald DiTullio.

The couple lived over on Grandview Avenue, which is where the city installed a small memorial park in 2009.
