City Celebrates Namesake's Birth Saturday

George Peabody turns 217 on Saturday and the public is invited to celebrate.

Good ol' George turns 217 this Saturday.

World-renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist George Peabody had his roots in South Danvers and when the town was renamed in 1868, it was in honor of its favorite son. Peabody was actually born where the George Peabody House and Museum is now at 205 Washington St.

The city is celebrating its namesake's birth on Feb. 18 with a traditional wreath-laying at Peabody's gravesite in Harmony Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the museum. The public is invited to both.
