5 Things to Know: George Peabody Legacy Award

The Peabody Education Foundation is starting up a new award in honor of the city's namesake.

Today is Friday, Jan. 4. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. The dates are now set for the special election to fill the vacant seat in the House of Representatives left by the death of Joyce Spiliotis in November.
  2. Chugging along on four straight wins and a career 500 for coach Jane Heil, Peabody girls' basketball is slated to visit conference opponent Lynn English tonight (7 p.m.) and then head down to Revere Monday (7 p.m.). Meanwhile, the Tanners boys' squad is slated to host the Bulldogs tonight (7 p.m.) and hopes for win No. 2 this season.
  3. The Peabody High Concert Band has entered the RRS Gift of Music Contest and needs your help to win a $15,000 grant. You can vote online through Jan. 11. Click here for more details.
  4. The city's inaugural ceremonies are Monday (7 p.m.) in Wiggin Auditorium at City Hall. Mayor Ted Bettencourt will give his mid-term address and both the City Council and School Committee will organize for the new year.
  5. The Peabody Education Foundation is establishing a new award in honor of the city's namesake. Recipients of the new George Peabody Legacy Award will be announced on Peabody's birthday -- Feb. 18. The PEF is kicking off the initiative Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Main Branch of the Peabody Institute Library and will provide more details then on the award. The event is open to the public.
