Peabody Recreation Has Spots Open for Winter Programs

Here's what you need to know today in Peabody.

Today is Friday, Jan. 17. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. There are still spaces open in a number of winter programs from the Peabody Recreation Department. You can register online, by fax 978-535-0483 or in person at 50 Farm Ave. Children's programs include: Broadway Kids, musical theatre workshops, dodge ball, Super Sports, gymnastics, hip hop, taekwondo, media club, art classes and vacation week and early release day workshops. Early Release Day Programs: Jan. 30 -- snow tubing; March 6 -- middle school skiing and snowboarding trip; March 13 -- Fire and Ice; March 19 -- indoor rock climbing. Preschool programs include: Tiny Tumblers Gymnastics, basketball and soccer. Adult programs include: watercolor and decorative painting classes, taekwondo and improv. Outdoor enthusiasts can also join in for cross country skiing and snowshoeing at Brooksby Farm (rentals and lessons available).
  2. The Peabody High boys' basketball team hits the road for Gloucester Friday (7 p.m.) while the girls host the Fishermen (7 p.m.).
  3. GreenPeabody is hosting a screening of the film "An Inconvenient Truth" on Friday (6:30 p.m.) at the Torigian Center. It's free and the group plans to show two more films over the winter.
  4. There's a beauty pageant and vendor fair Saturday at the Holiday Inn. The pageant is for girls ages 0-12. You can find more details here.
  5. Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and that means City Hall and other public offices will be closed for the day.
