North Shore Artists' Work on Display at Centennial Gallery

Here's what you need to know today in Peabody.

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 18. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. Check out the Centennial Gallery at The Musculoskeletal Center at 4 Centennial Dr. to see local artists' work on display. In fact, there's an opening reception Thursday from 7-9 p.m. The exhibit features the work of South Hamilton resident Ben MacAdam and Amesbury resident Lisa Courtney with seasonal landscapes on the North Shore and surrounding areas. Architecture, waterfronts, streets and boats all feature prominently in the local landscapes. Both artists also work in graphic design and incorporate style from that work into their paintings. The exhibit opened Dec. 4 and runs through Jan. 4. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and closed weekends. MacAdam is a Gordon College grad and studied at the New York Center for Arts & Media Studies. Courtney is a graduate of The Art Institute of Boston.
  2. Some of the cows aren't traveling far from the Hilltop. The iconic Saugus steakhouse on Route 1 closed its doors for good recently and has sold off all sorts of items inside and outside the restaurant, including those life-size fiberglass cows. Angela and Dave Luongo, who operate Little Shop of Treasures at the Liberty Tree Mall, recently acquired one of the cows via a friend and will have it on display as an attraction in their novelty toy shop in January. Angela (Petrelis) Luongo is also a Peabody native.
  3. Once the final bell rings on Friday, the Peabody Public Schools will be on vacation until Jan. 2. Have any fun things planned for the break?
  4. Skate with Santa: Kris Kringle will be at the McVann-O'Keefe Skating Rink Sunday for a special event from 2:10-3:40 p.m. with face-painting, balloons by Brian, a free raffle and prizes.
  5. There's a special comedy show planned to ring in the new year at the Elks Club. Larry Lee Lewis and Johnny Joyce will perform for the night with a buffet, dancing, live band and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a pancreatic cancer fund in memory of John "Oogie" May, who died earlier this year.
