Crusaders Revisit Playoff Rivalry With Red Raiders Saturday

Here's what you need to know today in Peabody.

Today is Friday, Nov. 6. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. Crusaders vs. Red Raiders: The Bishop Fenwick volleyball team is playing Melrose Saturday for the Division 2 North Sectional title. It's a re-match from two years ago when the Crusaders lost, 3-0, to the Red Raiders in the final. Fenwick also played Melrose in 2010, losing 3-2. This year, Fenwick knocked off Arlington Catholic Thursday at home, 3-1, to advance to the final round of the tournament after shutting out Dracut and Weston in the first two rounds. Saturday's game is 3 p.m. at Lawrence High School.
  2. Peabody is recognizing local veterans this year for Veterans Day in a few different ways. First. there is a Veterans Day Mass scheduled at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Sunday at 9 a.m., followed by a ceremony at 10 a.m. and then a birthday party for the Marine Corps up at the VFW Post at noon. A special patriotic concert is Sunday evening (6 p.m.) at City Hall and then on Monday itself the city will hold its annual Veterans Day parade and ceremonies. The march to City Hall from the VFW will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. followed by ceremonies scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday's concert, “United We Stand” is performed by We Are America and starts at 6 p.m. in Wiggin Auditorium. Admission is free. 
  3. The city will also be offering a free shuttle ride to and from City Hall for seniors Sunday evening so they can attend the concert. Concert goers can pick up the shuttle at the Torigian Community Life Center at 79 Central St., beginning at 4:45 p.m. The shuttle will also pickup riders at Brooksby Village’s McIntosh Clubhouse, Kingsbury Clubhouse and Towne Center beginning at 4:15 pm. Call the Peabody Council on Aging at 978-531-2254 to arrange for pickup at home.
  4. The Peabody High volleyball team lost, 3-0, to Haverhill in the semi-finals on Wednesday and were knocked from the playoffs. The Bishop Fenwick Crusaders, however, are still in it after defeating Weston, 3-0, on Tuesday. Fenwick now hosts Arlington Catholic Thursday (7 p.m.) in the semi-finals.
  5. There are a few holiday fairs this weekend: St. Adelaide's is hosting "A Fair for All Seasons" Friday and Saturday, the St. John Lutheran Church is holding its fall fair Saturday and then there's the Mass Motion Holiday Craft Fair Sunday at Our Lady of End Street.
  6. There's a Twice Loved Toy Sale Saturday at the Topsfield Fairgrounds. The sale is put on by the Community Giving Tree.
  7. The Liberty Tree Mall is hosting a local preliminary contest for the Sunburst Beauty Pageant on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kids age three and under and females up to age 27 are welcome to enter the pageant. The fee is $45. More details here on how to register.
