Annual Turkey Trot Kicks Off With Food Donation to Haven From Hunger

Here's what you need to know today in Peabody.

Today is Wednesday, Nov. 20. Here are five things to know today in Peabody.

  1. Turkey trot: A large turkey and hundreds of residents and staff at Brooksby Village will participate in the annual mile-long Turkey Trot at the retirement complex Wednesday after they load up a truck from Haven from Hunger with all the food donations they've collected in the past few weeks. People have donated canned goods and other food items. “This is an annual event so it’s nice to see everyone turn out year after year to help Haven from Hunger,” says Stefanie Fuller, the fitness specialist at Brooksby Village. “We have collected cases full of canned goods in the past so we hope to collect even more this year.”
  2. The Peabody Public Schools are celebrating American Education Week with an open house on Thursday at the Kiley School and some special guests. Deputy Commissioner of Education Alan Ingram, state Sen. Joan Lovely and state Reps. Ted Speliotis and Leah Cole will all be stopping by for the open house from 3-5 p.m. at 21 Johnson St. and there will be exhibits from each school. Peabody High culinary students will also be providing light refreshments while the Performing Arts Departments offers the entertainment.
  3. The Northeast Area ALS Support and Information Group meets Thursday over at the Torigian Center.
  4. Dress down for hunger on Friday. Haven from Hunger is asking local businesses to participate in a "Dress Down Day for Hunger" on Nov. 22. The food pantry asks employers to offer their employees an option to dress down for the day for a suggested donation of $5 to $10 that goes to the Haven. The pantry is located at 71 Wallis St. and serves residents from Peabody, Salem and Lynnfield. Visit www.havenfromhunger.org for more information.
  5. Looking to do some scrapbooking? Bring your supplies with you to the Main Branch Library Saturday for a morning of distraction-free creativity from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The event is a drop-in program for anyone who wants to work on his or her own independent projects, but take some inspiration from fellow scrapbookers. The event will be held in the Trustees Room. Space is limited, so call to reserve a seat at 978-531-0100.
