Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
The readers have voted, and the winner of our Peabody Patch Facebook page cover photo contest is Susan Washeba Plutsky for her picturesque photo at Brooksby Farm. Susan's photo will now be set as Peabody Patch's Facebook photo, and she will receive a $50 gift card as well. Thanks for voting, and thank you for your submissions! Editor's Note: Readers may notice that another of Susan's photos actually received more votes than this one. We were remiss, however, originally to ask readers to only submit horizontal photos -- vertical ones do not work well for Facebook cover photos. So we have …

We know there are a handful of "sweet" school events coming up in the next few days as Valentine's Day approaches. The Higgins Middle School Valentine's Dance is Friday night, along with father-daughter dances at the Burke and South elementary schools, and on Tuesday, the Center School serves up Valentine's ice cream sundaes. Will your child and/or spouse be at one of those events? Everyone has a cute photo. To help celebrate the holiday, we encourage our readers to share their photos from those events or other similar romantic outings around Peabody in our neighborhood gallery. It's simple; …
Irene is still predicted to be the biggest storm to roll through the North Shore in several years and you can be a part of the Peabody Patch coverage of the event. We want to see your photos and video clips from the storm. Now, to be clear, we are not asking anyone to go out into the storm and risk his or her health. But you can get an excellent view of what is going on in your neighborhood from your own front porch. Sharing your video clips and photos is easy. You can either upload them directly to this story or you can email them to me at john.castelluccio@patch.com. Be safe and enjoy …
With Hurricane Irene almost certain to batter the Peabody area this weekend, the need for up-to-the minute info is even more important. At Patch, we will be working around-the-clock to cover the storm, but in addition to our reporting, the more interaction we get from users the more comprehensive our coverage will be. Peabody Patch is as much your site as it is ours. So in wake of Irene, here’s how you can use Patch to help paint the local picture of the event. Get the news. When we know about storm-related news, so will you. From important town and village announcements, damages, power …
Beginning May 4, Peabody Patch will be making room for local bloggers on the site. We're looking for bloggers who can riff on various topics, share their personality and engage our readers in discussions. There are many exciting issues in Peabody these days, including the mayor's race, the future direction of downtown Peabody and the city's new push to become environmentally friendly by encouraging recycling and holding the first-ever Greenfest this Saturday. The cool thing about blogging is it gives members of the community a chance to discuss things that are important to them and these can …
It was Monday morning and the beginning of another week for Peabody Patch. But instead of making my usual rounds at City Hall or around town to dig up some new stories, I was packing fruit and vegetables in plastic bags with two other volunteers at the Haven from Hunger food pantry on Wallis Street. Peabody Patch's parent company, AOL which is headquartered in New York City, issued a 30-Day Service Challenge where all of its employees are required to volunteer some of their time to do community service work. My options were limitless. I could have even done the TOMS One Day Without Shoes …
Thanks to our readers for participating in our hot beverages contest, which ended on Friday – we got some good feedback on what locals like to drink and where they like to get it from. Our winner, chosen by random selection, is Rudy Van Oeveren. His favorite hot drink is a gingerbread latte at Perfecto's Cafe on Lowell Street and he can't say enough about the eatery. Here is what Rudy wrote: "Regarding favorite coffee place? Perfecto's Cafe in Peabody! Can't beat the coffee and friendly service. Plus owner Phil is great with giving back to Peabody." Rudy received a $10 gift card from …

Do you remember when we were kids and one of our friends got their picture in the local newspaper because they had just been recognized for doing something special or what it felt like to receive a gold star for a classroom project? Well, thanks to a new initiative launched this week by Patch.com, Peabody Peabody can now recognize one kid per week for doing any number of things that make them standout either at school or in their community. It could be anything from helping his or her high school win a big game to doing a really creative sciene project or being an Eagle Scout. Our goal is to …

Peabody Patch's first week of publication featured several stories that ranged from the City Council's decision to pass a hefty local property tax hike, the arrests of five out-of-town shoplifters at the Northshore Mall and plenty of holiday events to mark the Christmas season. On Tuesday, Nov. 30, the City Council passed a local property tax hike at City Hall that will force the average homeowner to pay $200 more over the next six months and the average business to pay $700 to make up a 2010-2011 budget shorfall. On Thursday, Dec. 2, Peabody Police arrested five shoplifters from New York …
