Bostik Settles for $600K Fine on 2011 Explosion

Bostik and the federal safety officials have settled on $600,000 in fines for the explosion that rocked the Middleton adhesives plant in 2011.

The Boston Road plant is located right across from the end of Russell Street in West Peabody and right near the town lines with Lynnfield and North Reading -- the Sunday evening explosion rocked nearby houses and was heard and felt across the North Shore. Bostik was originally fined last fall for $917,000 after a six-month investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration found numerous safety violations, but that fine has now been reduced. OSHA cited Bostik for violations of federal safety requirements and procedures …

What Should Go Here?

This Old Factory

What would you like to see at the old Fine factory off Lynnfield Street?

The old L. Fine & Co. factory at 143 Lynnfield St. (just behind Craig's Pond and the railroad tracks) has been vacant for years. So what would you like to see go in here? Redevelopment proposals have been floated around in the past, most notably one to convert the old factory into residential condos, but that plan never came to fruition. Remis Industries, which used to be next-door, was in similar straits until a few years ago when developer Sal Palumbo knocked down the building and created a new plaza. The Fine factory, which has four buildings on the six-acre site, is accessed from Corwin Street. My late cousin Charlie was a fixture at Red's in Salem. He would open up the restaurant early in the morning, make the coffee and turn on the grill. He would be proud to see the new addition to Peabody.   more ›

PHOTOS: Springtime is for Car Shows

Peabody High students put on their first annual car show recently and used the proceeds to promote safe driving habits.

About 20 students entered their cars in the first ever Peabody High Spring Car Show on May 3, showing off new paint jobs, detailing, sound systems and their wheels. The inspiration for the show came from Wrbasy Ramirez, a senior in the high school vocational program, and the intent was to have some fun and promote safe driving habits, especially with prom season approaching. PVMHS Principal Edward Sapienza, who is retiring this year, said he hopes the car show continues next year. "This is a great community event," he said, adding it's a good learning experience for students and just a "big deal for kids" in general to get to show off their wheels. He said it also helps make the connection between vocational students and mainstream …

Westside Owner Asking City Council to Remove Alcohol Restriction

The new owner of the Westside Family Restaurant is hoping the City Council will see its way to removing a longstanding condition that prohibits the restaurant from serving alcohol.

Stephen Judge purchased the Westside Family Restaurant from the Panousos family last year and now the new owner wants to try his hand at convincing the City Council to allow him to serve alcohol at the Lowell Street eatery. Judge, through his attorney John Keilty, is asking the council to remove a condition on the special permit for the restaurant that prohibits alcoholic beverages from being served or sold on the premises and then issue a new permit under which alcohol is OK. He's seeking an all-alcohol license in this case. A public hearing is scheduled for tonight during the council's regular session at 7:30 p.m. Three years ago, former owner Michael Panousos asked the council for the same thing but just for beer and wine, which would …

There is a simple reason that Asia Taste has a liquor license and the neighbors surrounding West Side Restaurant oppose one, Zoning. The West Side is located in an R1 district. The sale of alcohol is prohibited in an R1 zone. Asia Taste is located in a BN2 zone where it is allowed. We want to maintain the quality, value and peace of our neighborhood,as I am sure you would, in your neighborhood. …   more ›

John Lima won first place for the Best Overall Award and the People's Choice Award for his entry in the inaugural Peabody High car show.

Seven months of hard work certainly paid off for John Lima last Thursday for his entry into the inaugural Peabody High student car show, and it was actually his second time restoring the Chevy. Lima's bright green vintage entry into the show, which benefited the Healthy Peabody Collaborative, won first place in Best Overall and the popular vote in the People's Choice Award. Remarking on Lima's restoration job, Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group (which sponsored the show) joked: "John doesn't need to use headlights at night."
